Tarantino's film is very much about race relations in America, the story's post- Civil War setting actually allowing for an exploration of some very contemporary issues. As the sole African- American character among the lead roles, Jackson's Marquis Warren is a true badass whose interactions with the white characters becomes central to the story even as the mystery around who might be coming to Daisy's aid plays out. Warren's a Civil War veteran who carries a letter from Abraham Lincoln and was a legendary scourge to the Confederates. At a certain point in the tale, Warren also becomes a bit of a frontier Hercule Poirot as he starts piecing together which characters' stories and behavior don't ring true. You can imagine how the white characters react to this armed black man's investigation. This is arguably Tarantino's most nuanced and adult tale yet. That's not to say, though, that Tarantino's not also having fun with the material. There's plenty of gallows humor here (an appropriate term given the specter of Daisy's scheduled hanging looming over the entire story), signature Tarantino- isms, and an anecdote told by Major Marquis Warren that surpasses both True Romance's . You can keep an eye on everyone even as your main focus is on the characters in the foreground. Also great is legendary spaghetti western composer Ennio Morricone's tense and haunting score. The main cast is great, particularly Jackson and Goggins, the latter having arguably the most interesting arc in the film. New images from Quentin Tarantino. Leigh will likely land herself an Oscar nomination for her feral, remorseless turn as Daisy, who just might be the most honest if reprehensible of the bunch. As he did in Big Trouble in Little China, Russell adds a bit of John Wayne to his delivery, while Roth clearly enjoys chewing the scenery as Mobray. Bichir and Madsen are generally more understated in their performances, while Dern manages to find the humanity in his mean old racist character.
